For busy families, the summer months mark a change in gear with the family. Kids who have been out at school are usually home all day, and they spend most of their time outdoors getting fresh air in the garden. While all of this vitamin D and exercise is overdue by summer, it means we have to think ahead and get the house prepared.
More time outdoors means more cleaning, because kids will be bringing in muck. You’ll probably have half the neighbourhood tramping through the house, dragging bikes into the porch, or emptying the dusty garage in search of a long-lost tennis racquet or football. Thinking ahead makes this a lot easier to cope with.
Get Prepared
It’s time to declutter your home ahead of the summer holidays. Have a toy clear-out, and give unwanted items to your local charity shop. Invest in storage solutions for winter clothes: simple vacuum pack bags make it easy to put winter coats away.
It’s best to do this before summer, because the heat and commotion makes decluttering practically impossible once the kids have finished school. Get it done now, and you’ll find it easier to clean.
Plan Activities
Pretty soon, your kids are going to spend a lot of time in the garden, the park, or riding bikes around. All this outdoor activity means more mud and mess in the house. But you can stem the flow of dirty and grime by organising days out, and planning activities for the children in the house now and again.
It’s not unreasonable for you to want to enjoy your house through the summer, without the entire neighbourhood leaving you to babysit the kids. Keep the children occupied with low-mess activities like colouring, making dens, or making bird feeders for the garden, and rotate indoor toys so that younger children always have something ‘new’ to play with.
Hire a Cleaner
Face it: you’re still going to have to get work done during the holidays, while finding time to deal with all the extra muck in the house. A house cleaner can be a handy source of support over summer, knuckling down to the jobs you never have time to do.
If you’re constantly scraping mud off the carpet and scooping up melted ice lollies, you’re never going to have chance to get anything else done. When the cleaner comes, he or she can ensure your bathroom is spick and span, the beds re made, and all the hoovering is done.
Don’t Panic
Summer can feel a little like an uphill struggle for parents, as their pristine home gradually gets dirtier and messier by the day. The key is to get ready well in advance, get rid of clutter, and start the season with a clean home so you can keep on top of the chores.
