Animals present a number of cleaning challenges, above and beyond the average family with kids. Pet owners know this all too well. There are the pesky hairs that shed everywhere, and the little accidents that inevitably occur on the carpet. Cat litter trays, dog chews and hamster bedding also bring some distinctive odours into the home, and any pet with fur could be a carrier for fleas.
If you have pets, you might be wondering whether it’s worth paying a cleaner. In fact, it might be the best move you ever made.
Pet Hair: the Facts
Animal hair is extremely difficult to deal with. On carpets and upholstery, it gets entangled in the fibres. On smooth floors, pet hair forms clumps that have to be swept away at regular intervals. This can happen even if you vacuum once a day.
The truth is, many domestic vacuum cleaners aren’t strong enough to draw pet hair from a carpet. This is even more of a problem since the EU banned powerful vacuum cleaners because of poor energy efficiency ratings. Now, you can only buy a vacuum rated at 1,600 watts or below, and this will drop further to 900 watts in 2017.
In truth, it’s perfectly fine to have a vacuum cleaner rated at 700 watts, or even as low as 200 watts, but the vacuuming must be done frequently. When you have pets shedding fur all the time, it’s critical to keep on top of the cleaning. A regular visit from a professional cleaner is the best way to keep those stray hairs in check.
Banishing Odours
We don’t even notice pet odours because we live with them every day. But other people certainly will. The more animals you have in your property, the more diverse the smells are, and the more tactics your cleaners will use to banish them.
If you have cats, it’s important to provide one litter tray per cat, and clean those trays daily. Remove solids as soon as they appear, and empty the tray completely every couple of days. Rinse a mild solution of disinfectant or Milton fluid round the tray, then dry and re-stock with clean litter. Anti-bacterial litter is expensive, but it’s quite effective at controlling odours.
Your cleaner will also vacuum the area around the tray and sanitise all of your surfaces, ensuring that harmful bacteria is not transferred from the tray to your worktops or tables.
